Is it possible for a super flare to occur in our solar system?(Like in the new movie knowing)?

Is it possible for a super flare to occur in our solar system. And if so what would it mean for the Earth if it were in the path of one?
If the gov't did detect one do you believe they should tell the public, or let us go about our daily lives to avoid a panic(like in the movie)?

Short answer...no. Never in the history of the planet has there been a known mass extinction event caused by a solar flare. Solar flares can cause a lot of problems, but they are now powerful enough to cook the planet.
As for your question about the government...hypothetically there will not be any time in such a scenario to inform the public. Particles that make up a solar flare travel at about a 3rd of the speed of light meaning you would have about 15 minutes from the time it leaves the Sun to hit Earth.

Mass extinctions on Earth have been caused by only two known events: 1. Asteroid/Comet impact and 2. Eruption from a Super Volcano. Both of which we are due for. Those things are more likely to kill us than anything the Sun decides to do.

Yes, the Sun will eventually run out of hydrogen, grow into a red giant and destroy Earth. So there WILL be an end of the world some day. But that won't happen for another 4 or 5 billion years. And we likely won't be around anyway. By then either we are gone and living on other planets, or we've destroyed ourselves.

My wheaten terrier chews everything! Help!?

My little guy, Buddy, is 7 months and chews everything! I know he's a puppy, and has tons of toys: kong balls, tuffies, nylabones, etc...Nothing keeps his attention and/ or he chews the toy till it's not safe to play with anymore so I have to take it away (for example he'll chew the rubber of a kong till it's in bits). Does anyone have suggestions for healthy, inexpensive toys for pups? He's started pulling up drip systems, has chewed/destroyed solar patio lights, dug up the newly planted vegetable garden, killed the pond switch and wiring, urgh!! Anyone, suggestions?
As far as exercise: We have a 1/3 of an acre for a backyard. He gets tons of exercise and we go on walks often and run in our yard almost daily.

One thing that you can get a dog who chews things to ruins is a boiled bone or a nylabone.

When your dog chews items they are not supposed to say "no" firmly and replaced the not-to-be chewed item with a boiled bone.

As for the digging you may want to put red pepper flakes on the area he is digging up. They will get in his nose and eyes and act like pepper spray (harmless but unpleasant). Good luck

How can I landscape my front yard when no grass will grow?

No grass grows in my font yard, nothing only dirt. When it rains it's muddy and when it's windy dust finds it's way into my home. I have dust everywere in my home any suggestions???

I wouldn't go w/ a fish pond in the front yard... Sounds like a law suit waiting to happen. (kids are attracted to water)... unless you do one of those pond-less waterfalls maybe... just shut it off when you are at work.
Just landscape the whole thing nicely with small trees, and perennials.. add a lot of mulch to keep the dust down and sidewalks and maybe a little patio/courtyard type thing with a bench and planters on it to take up more of that non existent lawn.... and have the rest of the yard be a garden. with bird baths and feeders......and stuff like that....it can be gorgeous without a traditional "lawn"...start drawing it out on paper first, and let your imagination run wild!

Any large capacity bars in downtown San Antonio, preferably with an outdoor patio?

Any large capacity bars in downtown San Antonio, preferably with an outdoor patio? A sports bar would be perfect if there is anything big enough. By large capacity I mean 200 people.

I've worked downtown for many years and I can't think of a bar with that much outdoor capacity. Acenar, a Mexican restaurant on Houston St. (under Hotel Valencia), has a large patio and good drinks. Mexican Manhattan also has a very large patio that can be reserved.

The civil war! ?

please answer what u know and put what number ur answering
this is a lot of help guys!!

THANKS!! in ADVANCE!

1) what factors led to the civil war

2) what advantages did each side have

3) who were the key generals

4) What military strategy was used

5) what effect did the civil war leave on the landscape?
On politics? On the Economy

Factors: SLAVERY, and states-rights versus national law

Advantages:
Union: better equipped, more money, more troops, better morale, fighting a defensive war
Confeds: better generals, fighting for a reason -- slavery and states rights

Generals:
Union: Ulysses S. Grant, JEB Stuart, Burnside, McClellan, Pope, Irving McDowell, Hooker
Confeds: Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Beauregard, Johnston

Strategy: union just defended for a while. then they sent Sherman down to Georgia and he burned everything to the ground

Not too many effects on landscape, except for all the cannon holes
Politics: national laws were adopted with limited states-rights, one nation again
Economy: Slavery abolished in south so the economy crumbled. Cotton was a major export but not anymore with out slaves.

hope that helps!!

How can I paint? these lights to have a warm glow, amber color to them what paint would I use, I need a see through paint stain that will stick to these bulbs, I know its going to be a lot of work but the white is to bright. What about a pen that you can color glass with? but the light has to show through, any ideas out there? Thank You.

photographing led lights?

Which is better, photographing led lights, or the traditional lights. For indoor and outdoor on an Christmas tree. I will be using digital.

It really should not matter. Just be sure to take you camera off the "auto" mode and to some test shots to find the best exposure and then shoot using manual exposure settings.

Each type light has its own unique look, whether incandescent, LED or neon.

Shoot and enjoy the differences.

Describe the plant signalling pathway that utilises phytochrome to transduce light signals...?

Phytochrome is a protein containing a covalently attached chromophore. Phytochrome exists in 2 interconvertable conformations with different absorbtion spectra, Pfr and Pr. Pfr absorbs far red light and is generally the biologically active conformation. Pr absorbs red. Absorbtion of red light converts Pr to Pfr while absorbtion of far red converts Pfr to Pr.

Phytochrome responses are classically defined by their red/far red reversibility. For example, lettuce seeds require light to germinate. Red light induces germination but if followed by a pulse of far red light, germination is inhibited. It also contains a domain resembling a protein kinase and has been shown to autophosphorylate, however the functional significance of this in light signal transduction is unknown.

Phytochrome can measure light quality because if light contains more red than far red light (as is the case in daytime sunlight), most phytochrome will be in the Pfr form. Phytochrome mediates a variety of photomorphogenic phenomena including leaf expansion and inhibition of stem elongation.

One classic example is in the shade avoidance response of shade intolerant plants. Foliage readily absorbs red light and so in the shade of another plant there is higher amounts of far red light which will drive phytochrome to the Pr form. Pr does not inhibit stem elongation which allows shaded plants to elongate and grow to reach the sunlight.

How do I fix my solar garden light?

I know I'm being very ambiguous, but it does the reverse to what it should. The light glows when the solar panel is in the sun, but not when it's in the shade.
It's brand new

Take it back to the store. It should work like this. The solar panel charges the battery during the day light hours, and the lights deplete the charge at night. Then it start all over again. You probably got a bad battery and it's not holding a charge. The lights glow when it's in the sun because the solar panel is feeding the lights directly.

splitting speaker wiring for landscaping?

I am putting speakers on my backyard and need some help in answering a few questions.

I am running 12 gauge speaker cable throughtout the yard on pvc pipe and installing rock speakers, the specs are below:

Rock Speakers
Tweeter: 5/8” Polycarbonate dome
Woofer: 6 ½” Black polypropylene cone with a rubber surround
Frequency Response: 60 Hz – 20 kHz ± 3dB
Power Handling: 10-80 watts
Impedance: 8 ohms Nominal
Efficiency: 89 dB 1 watt/ 1 meter
Speaker Dimensions: 10 5/8” H x 8 3/8” H x 12 3/8” D

the runs from the source are from 60ft, 80ft, 100ft, 120ft for 4 speakers...I ran 4 cables but I since I bought 6 speakers I am wondering if I can connect 2 speakers to one of those cable runs?

I want to be able to have a louder sound throughtout the yard. I am connecting the speakers to a receiver so that I can hook up an ipod/mp3 player.

I am a speaker newbie, so any advice is welcomed.

thanks....

the speakers should line each side of the yard to create a left and right side. so 3 speakers should be right and 3 left. Do not hook the speakers up to surround sound out puts on the reciever just use left and right. Surround sound only works good for movies not music the rear speakers will not put out music just some muted background noise.
SO yes you can splice the wires together. you will not notice any power loose
