How to get a city the funding that will pay for a renewable energy grant package?

I own a buisness that converts home and industries to solar/wind power and I'm working on converting over a city streetlights, red lights and ball park to solar power. Where can I find a funding source that will pay the grant fee for the city?

The best way to do this is to hire a grant writer, getting a grant is often a difficult process.
It not only take a lot of research to find who is giving grants for certain projects, but competing with others for the grants.
My wife and I looked into doing it, but it was too overwhelming for us at our age.

Low voltage landscape lighting?

I would like to know if the cable connectors on low voltage landscape lights are rated for direct burial.The reason I ask is because the end of the wires coming off the light are bare.

I would seal the end of these wires with silicone or some other sealant to at least keep water out.

How to connect or use Solar Power Panels?

My family moved into a house that came with solar power panels but they are not connected and don't really understand how to even begin.

You will need help with this. Panels may or may not be 24 volt. If you can find a name tag, you can find out from the manufacturer's web site. Some folks hook them all in parallel. Mine are in series, to create 480 volts. the reason for going to higher voltage is to reduce power loss in the wiring. Even then, I used a wire size larger than recommended.

The frames want to be interconnected, and wired to ground. The live conductors connect through disconnect switches to an inverter. The inverter is sized to the output of the panels. Where the utility allows net metering, the inverters are connected through a disconnect switch to the grid, which of course also feeds the house. Assuming you are on the grid, you will not need batteries. If outages severely impact you, you can have batteries. Counting against them is that they are costly, and use part of the power you generate, just to keep them charged. If you have batteries, it is usually best to rewire circuits so noncritical circuits are disconnected during outages. Leaving perhaps minimal lighting, fridge, freezer and critical medical circuits.

How can a build a display of LED emergency dash lights?

How can a build a display of LED lights?
I sell emergency vehicle lights. I would like to be able select one model at a time (similar to car stereo displays commonly found in retail stores). The display would be a wall with a push button switch that would power 12vdc cigarette lighter outlet. I only want one unit to be powered at a time. Could I do this with momentary switches and a type of relay circuit?

It would be a simple matter of the 12 volt supply wire all the negatives together. Personally I'd get a rotary selector switch and wire the main positive to a fuse then to the incoming and the outputs to each different lighter plug. Be sure to chose components that exceed the highest current draw of the highest current draw light.
You can do the same with momentary switches but they are pricey especially for higher current ones . you can do it to power individual relays but that might get pricey depending on number of lights/relays needed
Another simple way is to use a standard light bar control box and wire each output to a different light

is this an alrite beginning? this is like...half of the first paragraph so yea....kinda incomplete?

I stared at the rain fall down slowly. The sky was gray, and cloud stricken. At least the weather matched my mood. I leaned back from the window and fell back in my seat. The car was slowing down as we neared the cemetery. I could hear the tires crush the poorly made path that led into the cemetery. With every foot that the car made, I could hear the poor gravel cracking from under the tire. For a second, I thought that the path was going to collapse, and pull us into an unending infinity. We made it though, without the road collapsing from under us to the funeral site. As we slowly pulled up I could see the large group of white chairs in front of the coffin. No one showed up though, except the priest. I could hear a sigh from one of my parents in the front, probably my mom. I stared back at the priest. He was an old man, probably too old now to be standing in the rain like this with only a small black umbrella.

It's good. I only found a few things I would personally change.

In the sentence "With every foot that the car made, I could hear the poor gravel cracking from under the tire." I would change "made" to "rolled".

I would take the sentence "We made it though, without the road collapsing from under us to the funeral site." out of the paragraph.

The two sentences about the priest at the end need to be the start of a new paragraph.

Outdoor Yard

How do I know what voltage outdoor lights to get?

I have 5 outdoor lights in my front yard that are on a timer, and the transformer is in the garage. These lights are (I believe) not low-voltage.. I use 25 watt bulbs in them. There is a thick black and white insulated wires running to each light. I need them replaced. I am not 100% certain what type of lights to get. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Pete, you got me confused. You say that you think they are not low voltage but you also say there is a transformer in the garage. If there is a tranformer, check that to see if it is 12 or 24V. also see if there is a wattage rating on the transformer somewhere. You should only go 70-75% of load. The type of bulb will depend on your fixture. Some take a standard screw in type. some are bi-pins and then there are the MR types that project light.Any more help can be had by e-mailing me.

that isnt what early signs of pregnancy is. that stuff you dont feel until like way later. especially the butterflies, i was almost 6 months along before feeling that. maybe your cycle is just late and that is why you are sick, that has happened to me before. but the first sign of pregnancy for me was my boobs were huge!

What is the difference between thermal and solar energy?

I know that solar energy is energy from the sun converted into elctrical energy and all that great stuff, but if you heat a sheet of flashing copper, put it in the sun and it makes a little more energy than it did in the shade, is that thermal or solar energy
OK I think the real question I'm asking is how is thermal energy converted into elctricity

Solar energy is energy from the sun.

There are many forms of energy.
- Plants use photosysthesis to convert solar energy into chemical energy.
- Solar cells convert solar energy into electricity.
- Evaporated and condensed water, thermals, and winds convert solar energy to mechanical energy.
- Copper flashing, like most things sitting out in the sun, convert solar energy to heat.

So, its solar energy until it is absorbed by the copper, then it is thermal energy (heat).

Edit: I know 2 ways to convert thermal energy to electrical. First is a thermoelectric generator. These tend to be costly, delicate, and have low efficiency. Check out the links below the article, especially the HZ-14 one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_effect

2nd way is to use an engine or turbine. Concentrating sunlight with mirrors onto a small boiler creates high pressure steam. It is used in a turbine to make electricity. Some experimental units have actually been deployed by utility companies in sunny areas. While they depend on government subsidies, with enough emprovement, the technologies may stand on their own. You can also use solar energy to heat air or other working fluid inside an engine to convert the thermal energy to mechanical motion that drives an electrical generator. The most efficient such engine is called a carnot engine, which is unfortunately impractical to make economically.

Finally, things like windmills and waterpower actually convert solar to mechanical power, which is then used to drive generators. These are actually variations of the 2nd point.

Path Landscape

those of you with multiple dogs and a green lawn? What is your secret? My dogs have pulverized my back yard.

I keep things cleaned up, but last year it started with the brown spots from urine and pretty soon I only had a few patches of grass. What can I do to get the grass growing this year. I have like, NO grass. I don't know what commercial facilities use, but it must work. Because they have to get more dog poo than I have, and they still have green grass.
There is more wear and tear on my grass, but the dogs aren't outside all day where they would wear paths, etc. I think it's just burned terribly and need to dump something on it, just don't know what. So, any landscape and lawn guys out there, give me some ideas!!

Lime, lime and more lime to combat the ammonia in the urine. But it'll still be a tough battle with dogs doing their "business" on the lawn.

Outdoor Lighting and Music in the City?

I have a house in a major US City with a 3rd-floor outdoor deck that also allows access to the roof. These areas provide my only outdoor areas and excellent views of the city skyline, and thus are ideal for entertaining. The deck is small (about 10' x10'), has an outdoor light, and has one outlet. The roof has no electrical outlets or lighting. I am trying to find ways, preferably permanent, to light and provide music to these spaces. Also I am a college student on a very tight budget so the cheaper the better. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Buy a whole bunch (bags) of these little white candles. Each is round, has it's own aluminum base. We do this with our terrace...you can line then along edges of the balconey, ledges etc. Very Euro trendy and cheap. As for music...just get a smal techno "bro box". You don't need to blast loudly .

Landscape Path

I need to build a stone path to my shed for my motorcycle, what kind of stone should i use?

The path is 32" wide and about 50' long. I need to drive my 800lb motorcycle out to my shed. I have in landscape timbers as a form. I'm not having luck with 2b stone. did i do something wrong.

Crusher run on top of crushed stone packs well (contains lots of fines). If you want a more finished fancier look, you could put down pavers bedded in sand. I like to use the landscape fabric underneath my stone.
