Could Solar Power work more effectively if the solar rays were magnified?
If we focused the sun's energy like a magnifying glass does into the solar panels, would this generate more power at all?
No, it would not. If the magnifying glass is the same area as the solar collectors, then it would be the same amount of energy the solar collectors would be gathering without the magnifying glass.
In a way it would be cheaper, using cheap mirrors to focus the sun's rays onto a smaller solar collector surface area. And solar collectors are far more expensive. But as to more power? No.

Outdoor Garden
Does anyone know of outdoor garden flowers/plants that the deer will not eat?
Plants may be annuals, perrenials....anything!!

how does the color of the background affect its absorption of solar in solation?
absorption is the opposite of reflection ... black surfaces do not reflect light, colored surfaces only reflect the wavelengths of their color and white surfaces reflect all wavelengths.

Garden Yard
Anyone know a natural non-cruel no poison way to keep cats out of garden, yard & kids play areas?
We have a very serious problem with numerous stray cats in our neighborhood. The cats are using my garden, yard & kids play areas as a toilet & it is very gross. Every neighbor I speak to has the same problem.
Updated Info: We can't have any fur bearing pets due to allergies in the family. So, I can't have a dog. There are no cats in my home either to attract other cats for mating.
Aren't mothballs poisonous to kids?
Pour ground black pepper around the perimeter of the area you want to keep the cats out of. They don't like the pepper up their nose, it won't hurt the cat, and it won't hurt the environment. It won't have any effect on the plants, and you won't be able to smell it. But the cats will.

Garden Lighting
Is 12v electrical garden lighting subject to the same regulations as 240v?
My dad wants to know if a 12v electrical garden lighting system (incorporating 5-10watt bulbs) would be subject to the same UK regulations as a 240v system, does he need a qualified electrician to set it up properly or is it something he can do safely and easily himself?
As long as the transformer that converts the mains voltage to the 12 volt supply is indoors or in a weatherproof casing and the supply to it is protected by an RCD (residual current device)breaker and your Dad is confident of his own abilities( or probably more likely you are confident of his ability)there should be no problem.
