if a photon of light is supose to have no mass, why is it that gravity can alter the path of a light beam?

if a photon of light is massless, how can the force of gravity alter the path of light? eg: light passing in the vicinity of a black hole would bend at an angle which is proportional to the black hole gravitational field. does'nt something needs to have mass to be affected by the force of gravity?

Gravity bends spacetime. A photon simply follows a straight path in a curved spacetime universe.

Inside a black hole, gravity is so strong that it bends space time back on itself. Photons caught in a black hole keep going straight ahead from their point of view but the dimensions of space are curled back on themselves so they turn in (circle, ellipse, spirals?) from our point of view.

Note to a previous answerer: relativistic mass applies to objects with mass approaching the speed of light: their rest mass is increased. A photon has no mass, and so no relativistic mass.

Lighting Light

Does anybody know how to get info on a science project about lighting a light bulb with a potato?

My daughter saw this on a show and now would like to do this for her science project. But I am unable to find any info on it.

how can you make a solar panel from a yard light have more amp, and watts?

well everyone hear is correct but they all are not telling you HOW>> they said connect more, you cant, holegen light, connect in series. BUT HOW???
Well first let us say this You cant get more power from one solor panel then what it produces you can max. its output with more light but it still will only produce what it was built for. But the fun begins with MORE CELLS.
But first you need to understand what watts means, Watts are your amp x your Volts. Since and average cell does 1.5v at .4 amps it watts are nominal but you can up its volts to increase Watts or up its Amps to increase watts. But what you need to know is how much volts do you need and for how long, more current means longer run time. AA/AAA/D/C all are 1.5v battery with different amps the bigger the battery the more amps, the more amps the more avail power a solor cell uses its power fast so you need to store the power in a battery.

To increase volts hook up in series to increase amps hook up in parallel. Each cell is marked with a possitive and a neg, Neg is ussaully black. Think of a solar cell as a battery for a flash ligh the battery go + touch -, this increases there power from 1.5 v to 3v at the same amps, but if you connect + to + and - to - you still get 1.5v but now at 2x the current so longer running but if you take 2 battery and connect them + to - and then connect them together + to + and - to - with another 2 batterys connected + to - then now you have doubled voltage and current now doubling total watts. HAVE FUN. Hope that helps

How do I connect led lights to my car?

I need to put led lights on the exterior of my car, but they need to be connected to a power source. How do I connect it to the battery? I'm trying to put lights under the door handle, on the tailpipe, on the license plate, and on the side view mirrors.

i put leds under my car all you have to do is run the main power wire from you battery to a switch and then to the leds just make sure that you turn off the switch when you dont want them on there is also a website called www.oznium.com they have help forums that will have wiring drawings on them too

All the ones I see have a tiny collector and a pale single LED light. Are there any that are like real lights? At any price?

Lights Voltage

Low Voltage garden lights wire break?

I planted my flowers yesterday and now half of my low-voltage lights are out. Is it correct to assume that I will find the break at the first light that is out? Do they light in succession of the wire?

yes in between the last like that works and the first light thats out you should most likely find a wire break.

Lawn Solar

Why cant we change the curriculum we are teaching our children?

Because the Earth and it's inhabitants are dying don't you think a good step would be to alter the school curriculum to tech a few generations of children how to be more self sufficient and less reliant on outside sources. maybe we could teach medicine making, growing your own foods, building Earth friendly housing, solar and wind energy. Seems like everything we need we buy from Walmart and it falls aprt in no time at all. We buy medicines that do not work or are harmful to us. Why not make your own from the weeds growing in your back yard. Who said we all have to have perfectly manicured golf course looking lawns? The same companies that are selling us weed killers are selling us pills for our ills made from things out of the very plants (weeds) we are using their products to destroy. Let's change the curriculum. Maybe our children can save the planet if we do. And save themselves. Teach alchemy, teach coping skills, teach self sufficient housing and farming.

If you are an American you know that all the Republicans care about is math and english. Everything else is not important and not funded. We are many lifetimes away from teaching anything of the sort as there are too many ignorant people in America.
Oh, and this deals with taxes and people not wanting to pay them. Kind of like when the bridge went down. They vetoed a 5 cent per gallon gas tax to help the infrastructure, but then in the end, was it worth it? It is almost like the words on the screen for CNN should have been (under the horrific pictures of the cars in the water) "Your tax cuts at work"
Taxes are not a bad thing people. It is what is done with them that needs to change.
