how to spot silver and gold in a rock that contains Garnets?

I think i may have this situation

Garnets are a family of common rock-forming calc-silicate and aluminum silicate minerals, found in high temperature metamorphic and igneous rocks, as well as alluvial placers. The only common type of mineral deposit that could reasonably be expected to contain gold +/- silver with garnet would be a skarn. They are heavy and resistant to weathering and therefore they can accumulate in placer deposits - but you said you have a rock.

Identifying gold and silver in a rock containing garnets would be the same as identifying gold and silver in any other rock.

Most silver is found in nature as a mineral - in other words silver is usually combined with other elements such as sulfur, lead, and arsenic as a compound. Native silver is very rare.

Gold is usually found in its elemental form. Native gold (called visible gold or "VG" by geologists and prospectors) is quite rare, but can be identified by its bright yellow color, metallic luster, lack of oxidation, malleability and generally amorphous character. It can be further determined by high conductivity and specific gravity.

Muscovite mica is commonly mistaken for silver by non-specialists, and phlogopite mica, pyrite, and chalcopyrite may look like gold to the untrained eye.

If you still think you've really got gold and silver, most mineralogy departments at your local university could check it out for you, or you could ask for a geochemical analysis at a laboratory like ALS Chemex, Acme Labs or Omac Labs.

can I underpower LED lights?

I'm considering using LED UV light bulbs (3 or 5mm) to help grow some plants in my room this summer. I would just use the window and the natural sun, but my only window will be occupied with an air conditioner. Now the question, i was thinking of using led lights for this, and powering them off of a small solar panel i might place outside the window. Because plants require 12 hours of light, and darkness in a normal day, I'd like them to only be active for 12 hours a day. Would leds work under the constantly changing voltage of a solar panel as the sun moves and sets, or would they shut off, or receive some damage?

I am capable of using a battery and a timer, but I'm trying to cut costs and complication as much as possible. The panel will probably be stripped from a solar accent patio light. I'm also aware of the dangers of UV light and, if you must know, I'm growing bamboo, nothing illegal.

You can under power them, but it will not hurt them. I have 12" UV LED light that have an inverter that powers them, the power draw is minimal and the output is amazing. I hooked them up to a car battery charger on 2amp trickle charge and ran them for 6 months straight with no problems.

How can I make a small, self-contained solar oven?

How can I make a solar oven from a cardboard box about 26cm by 10cm into a solar oven? I want to be able to do it with basic materials such as duct tape, Foil, Baking Pans, Clear plastic, etc. Also, I want to do it without any magnifiers or hazardous materials.

The solar oven plans I have are made with iron and glass. There is a cardboard solar reflector plan, with aluminum foil. They are both quite complicated, and come from the book: Roughing it Easy, by Dian Thomas. You might check with the boy scouts or girl scouts for easier oven plans. I'd google it if I wanted to do this, which I might this spring with my troop. Good luck!

What is a good flower bush that only grows about 2 feet tall?

I am wanting to outline my driveway with a Colorado Blue spruce then a flower bush then a solar spot light then another flower bush then another colorado blue spruce and keep repaeting that on both sides. So I wanted to know a pretty flowering bush that at most grows to 2 foot tall, I prefer 1' -1 1/2 foot , that goes great with a colorado blue spruce.

If the area is in the shade of the trees, then Skimmia, or Azalea would be a good choice.
For sun areas Spirea, Viburnum, Weigela, Genista, Heather, Daphne, Leucothoe, Pieris, Potentilla, Rock Rose, and Shrub Rose.
Most shrubs don't bloom for very long. It is best to pick an evergreen shrub, if it is to be on "display" on your driveway.
Give it plenty of room away from your Blue Spruce, because the tree roots will take over and kill the shrubs when they are larger. The shrubs can be maintained to the desired height by pruning.

If I wanted to power an LED using body heat does you body produce enough to do so?

What would I need to transform body heat into energy? Maybe this hasn't been discovered yet, but I do believe it has, any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The quantity is plenty, about 100 watts. Harnessing it is the difficulty.
About a year ago, there were some scientists working on the problem in Germany. There are other efforts I found in a google search, but you can do that as well as I can.

Basically, to use heat to harness energy, you need to have a significant tempurature differential. I believe the german idea is to use microcircuitry to take advantage of a much smaller tempurature differential than we can utilize today.

what is the best way to calibrate the color of my led monitor, to ensure I print the correct picture?

I use a mac with an cinema display, and a HP printer. I want to ensure that the color I see is the color that will print. How to do this in a pratical and inexpensive way?

If you have installed adobe products, there is a tool (i forgot the name) to calibrate your screen...

There exists also (very expensive) hardware solutions. But i guess the solution above should do the trick.

What do YOU think of global warming?

It is not something that you may or may not belive in - but, it is something that you will eventually not be able to ignore.
Given the chance, would you push the entire planet away from nuclear and carbon emissions and lead it towards the power of fusion, solar energy, wind farms and bioelectricity?
Would you stop the production of incandescent lamps, gas-burning engines,- oil refineries, drilling rigs and coal mines?
Would you make a push for the revolution of electrical engines, LEDs and CFLs?
You must realize that the reality of global warming is something that we have the solution to but really are just too lazy and dependent to care.

Submission of your most heartfelt answers would be greatly appreciated!

I'm an American deeply disappointed in George Bush on a variety of issues, but when he declared global warming is a scientific concept and his advisers backed him, I knew our country was being led by a total idiot and his playmates.

Back in the 70's I had the A/C unit removed from my car -- a sacrifice, I live in Florida -- to help stop FCs contaminating the atmosphere and harming birds and wildlife. I make the common-sense choices to help lessen my contributions to global warming.

I am afraid of global warming and the way it is accelerating faster than predicted. It is frightening that something we do has negative impact on Iceland and the Poles, that we are directly contributing to the drowning of polar bears and deaths of penguins and seals with our insistence on clinging to fossil fuels and our way of life, expecting everyone else to make sacrifices.

We may have solutions to global warming, but it seems a committed few are willing to embrace them. Months ago I was stuck behind an SUV with a W bumpersticker, and another that read, "Stop Global Whining." The only reason I didn't ram that sorry jackal is because I couldn't afford to repair my car.

I read recently that scientist are considering deliberately releasing air pollution high into the stratosphere as a temporary protection for Earth, to buy time for our slower solutions to work and to prevent Arctic ice from melting further. I think it will take something that extreme to not only buy us the time we need, but to impress more people that everyone in an industrialized society is contributing to global warming, and everyone has to make sacrifices to save our planet, not just the "Greenies" and a handful of Democrats in the US, and all the other countries while USA remains the worst offender, and will -- for the next two years.
